"The Forest of the Sacred Tree"–An 8K Immersive Journey through Alishan Forest Railway

Jointly produced by Public Television Service (PTS) and Japan’s NHK International, this groundbreaking documentary marks the world’s first presentation of Alishan’s majestic forest landscapes and century-old railway culture in ultra-high-definition 8K video with 22.2-channel surround sound.

The Forest of the Sacred Tree

The Forest of the Sacred Tree offers a richly layered portrayal of Taiwan’s Alishan region, capturing its distinctive natural beauty and cultural heritage. Employing the latest in cinematic technology, the production team highlights remarkable features such as the railway’s iconic figure-eight loops, Z-shaped switchbacks, horseshoe curves, and the dynamic preservation of the Shay steam locomotive. The film also showcases the domestically manufactured cypress-wood train, Fusen, a symbol of Taiwan’s craftsmanship.

Black Box Theater Edition

To bring this experience to museum audiences, NHK Japan, PTS Taiwan, and our institution present a special “Black Box Theater Edition.” This version reimagines the documentary through a curated selection of rare visual and audio material, utilizing 8K projection and a 64.6-channel immersive soundscape to transport viewers into the heart of Alishan—where the railway weaves together breathtaking natural scenery and profound cultural narratives.
